Sürat al-‘Alaq-96 (Revealed at Makkah)
سورة الـعلق
Iqraa, or Read! or Proclaim ! Or Al-‘Alaq, or The leech-like clot
| *** |
Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
| *** |
1. Iqraå bismi Rabbikal lazee khalaq.
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
(VERSE NO1). Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created
| *** |
2. Khalaqal-insaana min ‘alaq
خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
(VERSE NO2). Created man, out of a leech like clot:
| *** |
3. Iqraå wa Rabbukal-Akram.
اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ
(VERSE NO3). Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,

4. Allazee ‘allama bil qalam.
الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ
(VERSE NO4). He Who taught (the use of) the Pen,
| *** |
5. ‘Allamal-insaana maa lam ya’lam.
عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
(VERSE NO5). Taught man that which he knew not.
| *** |
6. Kallaaa innal-insaana la yatghaaa.
كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَى
(VERSE NO6). Nay, but man doth transgress bounds, all
| *** |
7. Ar-ra-aahus-taghnaa.
أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَى
(VERSE NO7). In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.
| *** |
8. Inna ilaa Rabbikar ruj’aa.
إِنَّ إِلَى رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَى
(VERSE NO8). Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).
| *** |
9. Ara’aytal-lazee yanhaa.
أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَى
(VERSE NO9). Seest thou one who forbids
| *** |
10.’Abdan izaa şallaa.
عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّى
(VERSE NO10). A votary when he (turns) to pray?
| *** |
11. Ara’ayta in kaana ‘alal hudaaa.
أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى
(VERSE NO11). Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-.
| *** |
12. Aw amara bittaqwaa.
أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَى
(VERSE NO12). Or enjoins Righteousness ?
| *** |
13. Ara’ayta in kazzaba wa tawallaa.
أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى
(VERSE NO13). Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?
| *** |
14. Alam ya’lam bi-annal laaha yaraa.
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَى
(VERSE NO14). Knoweth he. not that Allah doth see ?
| *** |
15. Kallaa la-‘il-lam yantahi lanasfa’am binnaaşiyah.
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ
(VERSE NO15). Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,

16. Naaşiyatin kaazibatin khaaţi’ah.
اصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ
(VERSE NO16) A lying, sinful forelock!
| *** |
17. Falyad’unaadiyah.
فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَه
(VERSE NO17). Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):
| *** |
18. Sanad uz-zabaaniyah.
سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ
(VERSE NO18). We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!
| *** |
19. Kallaa la Tuti Hu Wasjud Waqtarib.
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِبْ
(VERSE NO19). Nay, heed him not: but prostrate in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah).
